ADPM Mértola, as part of the CIRAWA project – Agroecological Strategies for Resilient Agriculture in West Africa, in partnership with the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on the island of Maio, is holding a series of Training Sessions on Agroecology, Agroforestry Systems and Biointensive Agriculture.
There will be two days of training (August 8 and 9), from 8 am to 4 pm, at the Morrinho Zootechnical Center – Calheta. The training will have a theoretical and practical component, with the installation of an experimental agroforestry system on the perimeter of the Zootechnical Center, and is aimed at local farmers and technicians from institutions working in the area.
The training will be given by Alfredo Sendim, a specialist in agroecology. Responsible for Herdade do Freixo do Meio, Portugal.
Objectives:
- To train farmers and technicians in the principles and practices of agroecology;
- To teach biointensive farming techniques to increase productivity and soil health;
- To promote sustainability and resilience in agricultural practices;
- To set up the project’s experimental field.

The CIRAWA project aims to increase climate resilience and agricultural productivity at local level, ensuring the viability of small farms, while protecting the environment in West Africa through agro-ecological solutions. Through awareness-raising and training, the aim is for agroecological techniques to be adopted and implemented by farmers on the islands of Santo Antão and Maio.
In Cape Verde, CIRAWA is taking place on the islands of Santo Antão and Maio, and is coordinated regionally by ADPM Mértola, in partnership with the Cape Verde Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, AJACM – Associação dos Jovens Agricultores de Casa do Meio and the Associação de Mulheres do Planalto Leste – Amupal – Casa das Caldeiras.
