From 22 to 24 May 2024, farmers from Maio Island, along with technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Maio and Santo Antão and other organizations, participated in a transformative training session on agroecology as part of the CIRAWA project.
The theoretical component of the training, led online by agroecology expert Alfredo Sendim from Herdade do Freixo do Meio, aimed to enhance the knowledge of participants in key agroecological areas, covering topics such as:
- Industrial vs. Agroecological Agriculture
- Soil Formation and Climate Change
- Agro-ecological Practices
Technicians from Santo Antão enriched the training by sharing their invaluable experiences in agroecology, focusing on pest control through biopesticides and biofertilizers.
The practical component of the training included an insightful visit to a forage field, in partnership with the Maio 2025 Project.
Looking ahead, the training will continue in August with the establishment of an experimental field to test the most suitable agroecological techniques for Maio Island’s unique climate.
