Composting Techniques for Healthy Soils

On July 24-25, 2024, CIRAWA partner ISRA organized a training workshop in Mbane, Senegal, aimed at strengthening composting practices among farmers in the Senegal River Valley. The workshop sought to build both theoretical and practical knowledge of compost production, helping market gardeners and other producers adopt sustainable agricultural practices.

The training, held at Mbane Town Hall and a local field, was based on a preparatory survey conducted by ISRA to assess farmers’ knowledge of composting. The survey revealed that while interest in composting was growing, few farmers were actively using it. Most farmers in the region cultivate groundnuts, onions, rice, tomatoes, cassava, okra, and aubergines, highlighting the need for tailored composting techniques to support their crop production.

The workshop introduced two key composting methods: heap composting, presented by Dr. Mame Sokhna SARR, and pit composting, demonstrated by agricultural producer Mr. Moussa Diop from Saneinte. The sessions covered the necessary materials, layering techniques, and essential factors such as aeration, moisture, and nutrient balance. Farmers also received practical tips on improving compost quality based on specific crop needs.

Discussions during the workshop highlighted the benefits of composting over direct manure application, particularly in terms of soil health and cost savings compared to chemical fertilizers. Women growers noted that compost improved crop storage longevity, making it a valuable alternative. The interactive feedback session demonstrated a strong understanding of the methods taught, with participants eager to apply their new skills.

The training was led by experts from ISRA, including Dr. Mame Sokhna SARR, Mr. Talla TALL, Mr. Mamadou Moustapha SALL, and Ms. Fota GUEYE DIEYE. The event brought together 23 farmers, 11 of them women, who expressed appreciation for the training and requested technical materials for further guidance. These materials are currently being prepared and will be distributed soon.

This workshop marks a significant step in CIRAWA’s mission to promote agroecological practices in Senegal and beyond, ensuring sustainable and environmentally friendly farming methods.
