Engaging the Next Generation at Njawara Basic Cycle School in The Gambia

On 16 May 2025, CIRAWA took another step toward strengthening agroecological awareness in The Gambia through youth engagement.

The Njawara Agricultural Training Center (NATC) met with the Njawara Basic Cycle School leadership, including the Headteacher and subject teachers in Agriculture and Social & Environmental Studies, to explore ways to involve students in the CIRAWA project.

The discussion focused on introducing school children to agroecology and climate change through practical learning. Building on a similar past intervention, the school proposed creating a 25m² fenced garden area within the school grounds. This dedicated space will be used for seedling cultivation and hands-on demonstrations of Climate Smart Agriculture techniques.

Alongside CIRAWA’s educational postcards, this garden will provide students with the opportunity to learn about soil health, planting methods, and the importance of sustainable food systems.

By engaging schools in this way, CIRAWA continues its mission to co-develop agroecological solutions with local communities and ensure that the next generation plays an active role in shaping resilient food systems.
