As part of the celebrations for World Agriculture Day (20 March), World Tree Day (21 March), International Day of Forests (21 March), and World Water Day (22 March), various activities were carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Maio Island, the SOMOS campaign, the Maio Biodiversity Foundation, and the Maio Municipal Council.
The main objectives of these initiatives were to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, and strengthen community engagement in protecting natural resources and restoring degraded areas.
The activities included:
Awareness Campaign, Tree Planting, and Visit to the School Nursery – Held at EBO Calheta School.
Tree Planting Campaign in the Nhudam Area – With the participation of students from EBO Cidade do Porto Inglês School.
Field Visit to the Zootechnical Centre – Students from EBO Morrinho School had the opportunity to learn about plant production in the nursery, explore the experimental field, and visit the greenhouse, gaining insights into farming techniques and environmental conservation.
The active participation of students and local communities reinforced the commitment to environmental protection and the sustainable development of Maio Island.
In Cape Verde, the project is active on the islands of Santo Antão and Maio, with regional coordination by ADPM Mértola, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Cape Verde, AJACM – Associação dos Jovens Agricultores de Casa do Meio, and the Associação de Mulheres do Planalto Leste – Amupal – Casa das Caldeiras.
The project is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.
